Choosing a Retirement Community

A retirement community or senior living community has become the in-thing not only for senior citizens but also within the real estate industry itself. A plethora of communities are emerging in many states, especially in Tamil Nadu. More than ever before, promoters are turning to this premium sector in their construction business. Not that regular housing or gated communities are losing steam. However, the demand for housing for senior citizens surges ahead.

It’s becoming essential for retired couples as well as single senior citizens to find such housing. Living alone and running a household becomes a burden and an unnecessary responsibility. Aging men and women prefer to spend the evening of their lives in a relaxed, peaceful manner.

Who chooses the Home?

As of now, it appears that children, especially those living abroad, make the decision to move their parents to a “safe and comfortable“ place. But that trend seems to be changing. Many retired couples, or those on the eve of retirement, take the plunge on their own. They begin scouting for a nice and affordable home in a place of their choice. For those with roots in Tamil Nadu, the choice centres on Chennai, Coimbatore, or Tirchy, for instance, as transport and communications assume importance. Moreover, these homes are located well outside the city proper. The place needs to be accessible by air, rail, and road, with reliable communication facilities as well as proximity to a good hospital.

What do they expect?

Apart from transport and telecommunications, a comfortable living space, proper maintenance, palatable and healthy food, basic entertainment, spiritual activities, a 24x7 clinic or medical facility, and leisurely walk spaces complete the list.

Why did I choose Ziva?

Though I belong to Tiruchirappalli district, I spent the last 45+ years in Chennai, except for a couple of postings abroad, so settling down in this vicinity became inevitable.

My friends and relatives are here, and above all, my daughter lives close by. After seeing a couple of senior citizens' homes, I zeroed in on Ziva, touted as an 'Elite Active Retirement Community.' The choice was between Bengaluru, where my son lives, and Chennai. I chose the latter. It took a while to convince my children, but after visiting Ziva a couple of times, they agreed.

They knew how tired I was, running behind plumbers and electricians, as I happened to be the association secretary for 25 long years, just waiting to run away.

Settled and Happy

Now you can say that I took the right decision at the right time. I firmly believe that there is a life after retirement, and you need freedom and space to enjoy that. It’s not as though you cannot live with the children, especially if they are in India. They need their space just as you need your independence. Of course, every home or community will have problems. Everyone cannot be satisfied at the same time. A slight adjustment may be necessary to slip into the new environment and new routine. But you win new friends and a healthy atmosphere as you wait for The Final Call.
